NATIONAL SEMINAR in HINDI ON
WATER: CONSERVATION, PURIFICATION & HARVESTING

(SALIL-04)

27-28TH APRIL, 2004

BACKGROUND

Indiscriminate and wanton withdrawal of groundwater has led to depletion of water table at a steady rate every year in India. The problem is compounded further due to huge disposal of industrial effluents, causing contamination of available water resources and destruction of aquatic lives. Inspite of heavy rainfall in some parts of the country, we have not been able to harness the excess water in a useful manner, as is evident from simultaneous draughts and floods in different parts of India.

Our Honourable Prime Minister and President of CSIR, Shri. A. B. Bajpayee, has drawn attention of the scientific community towards this imbalance and made a fervent appeal to meet this challenge.

National Metallrugical Laboratory(NML), Jamshedpur, has been working actively on the appraisal of groundwater pollution and its mitigation and treatment of industrial effluents for the last more than ten years. It has also been active in protecting water pipes from corrosion through cathodic protection, as also in developing corrosion inhibitors, various organic and mettalic coatings for corrosion protection of the steel pipes. In keeping with the appeal of Honourable Prime Minister and the requirement of the nation, it has been decided to hold a two day National Seminar in Hindi at NML, on treatment and conservation of water with special emphasis on groundwater for the purpose of drinking.

The target groups for this Seminar are Scientists, Engineers, state PHEDs, NGOs, Academics, working on water and sanitation and social workers.
