The process of production of ferro-chromium in Submerged Arc Furnace , is energy-intensive. Major efforts are required to optimise the specific energy consumption in order to reduce the cost of production. A reduction in the specific power consumption by 0.1 MWH per tonne of hot metal(THM) produced can lead to a saving of about Rs15 million per annum in a typical industrial plant producing Fe-Cr(about 50 000 tonnes/annum). A loss in of 0.25 tonne of metal per day will be equivalent to the loss of Rs10 000/- per day for a plant. The cost of raw materials adds to the strain on the profitability of the process. It is necessary to maintain a high level of process-efficiency in terms of maximising the recovery of metallics and optimising the power consumption in order to remain competitive. The efficiency of the process can be improved only through an understanding of the basic feature of the technology of production, viz., (a) the thermo-chemistry, (b) heat distribution, (c) electrical characteristics. FERALSIM is a simulator that will help the producer to achieve this and predict and estimate in advance the influence of various operation parameters on the process so that it can be operated at the highest level of efficiency.

The simulator has three modules:
Feralsim1
Feralsim2
Feralsim3

These three modules advise the operator on the thermo-chemistry, heat transfer and utilization and electrical characteristics of the process. These can be exploited for increasing the efficiency of the process and also for innovating new operation practices.
