Overview
Research activities of this division involves studies on synthesis of advanced materials and development of new processes and techniques for improved performance of materials & components and mitigation of environmental problems covering a broad area of energy, space, oil & gas, iron &steel and green synthesis of materials. The research facilities available with this division includes state-of-the-art machines and tools for the study of advanced coatings, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Hot Dip Process Simulator (HDPS).
Areas of Research
Core R&D areas:
- Functional Materials
- Corrosion and Coatings
Functional Materials
The focus of the group is the study of solids, liquids, and their interfaces across 1D, 2D, and 3D nanostructured materials to address challenges in energy, environment, and healthcare. The core objective of the group is to develop innovative functional materials and green processes to support sustainable development by meeting growing energy demands while minimizing environmental impact. Current research emphasizes the exploration of advanced nano materials including 2D materials like graphene, metal chalcogenides, biowaste derived composites and MXenes for energy saving, generation, and storage applications. In the biomedical domain, the group is actively involved in the development of high-strength biodegradable materials such as magnesium (UTS > 200 MPa) alloys for implant applications in collaboration with industrial partners. Other important research areas of the group include alloy design through elemental composition tuning, rapid quenching of alloy melts, and their post-processing. The synthesis and application of functional materials such as metallic glasses, bulk metallic glasses (BMGs), and amorphous alloys, processed into ribbons, powders, wires, rods, and plates. These materials find use in diverse applications including transformer cores, GMI sensors, additive manufacturing (3D printing), metal joining, magnetic shape memory devices, magneto-caloric systems, jewellery, protective coatings, and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding etc.
Corrosion and Coatings
The research activities of the group deal to understand and develop solutions to corrosion issues including aqueous, atmospheric, high-temperature, and molten salt environments as well as general and localized corrosion. The research is strongly driven by the corrosion problems encountered by various industries including oil & gas, power plants, steel, automotive, railway, defense, marine, infrastructure & construction, aerospace, chemical & fertilizers. Corrosion audit and survey including root cause analysis of corrosive failures are also actively being pursued in the group. The activities are further dedicated to advancing environmentally sustainable surface coating technologies utilizing diverse fabrication techniques including electroplating, hot-dip simulation & galvanizing, sol-gel processing, thermal spraying, magnetron sputtering, and electron beam evaporation. Processes are also developed to engineer the surfaces utilizing via diffusion bonding, shot peening and microstructural engineering, in addition to new corrosion resistant alloys. Environmentally benign coatings to replace toxic cadmium, colorized hot-dip zinc alloy coatings and carbide-based coatings for sink rolls applications are few such developments made by the group.
