Coal is the primary energy source in India. To ensure optimum utilization of Indian coal, scientists of AAC division are working on diverse areas of coal research. The focus areas are:

• Advanced Coal Characterization & coal core analysis
• Coke preparation from non-coking coals using novel additives
• Structural elucidation of coking component of coking coal
• Oil agglomeration to reduce mineral matter in coal
